Ford’s Theatre celebrates the legacy of President Abraham Lincoln and explores the American experience through theatre and education. A working theatre, historical monument, world-class museum and learning center, Ford’s Theatre is the premier destination in Washington, D.C., to explore and celebrate Lincoln’s ideals and leadership principles: courage, integrity, tolerance, equality and creative expression.
Ford’s Theatre is a living tribute to President Abraham Lincoln, who was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth while attending a performance of Our American Cousin at Ford’s on April 14, 1865. Following Lincoln’s death, Ford’s ceased all activities and, over the years, served as a museum, as office space and as a storage facility. More than one hundred years after the assassination, Frankie Hewitt secured federal and other funds to restore the site as a theatre.
