Ambassador Wouters presented his credentials to President Obama on September 16, 2016. He joined the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1980, beginning his diplomatic career at the Belgian Embassy in Rome. He was the Permanent Representative of Belgium to the European Union from 2011 to 2016. Ambassador Wouters was Deputy Permanent Representative of Belgium to the United Nations from 1995 to 2000. From 1986, Ambassador Wouters was appointed to several functions in European Affairs, including within the Permanent Representation of Belgium to the EU. As Chief of Staff to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, he was one of the main architects of the successful Belgian EU-Presidency.
Ambassador Schuwer presented his credentials to President Obama on September 17, 2015. He began working for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1979. From 2010 to 2015 he served as Ambassador to Belgium, and in 2009 and 2010 was the Director of North Africa and Middle East Department Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Hague. From 2007 to 2009 Ambassador Schuwer served as Director of the Private Office of the Secretary General of NATO, and he also held the role as Deputy Permanent Representative to the EU Permanent Representation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands from 2002 to 2006.
Ambassador Lucas presented her credentials to President Obama on September 16, 2016. She began her diplomatic career in 1990, when she joined her Foreign Ministry’s Directorate for Political and Cultural Affairs. From 2008 to 2016 she served as Permanent Representative of Luxembourg to the United Nations in New York, including during Luxembourg’s first-ever mandate on the UN Security Council in 2013-2014. From 2004 to 2008, Ambassador Lucas held the position of Political Director in Luxembourg’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She also served from 2000 to 2003 as Deputy Political Director and, before that, for five years as Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York.
